OpenSolaris News

Fri July 4 2008 updated The Genunix site statistics, available by clicking on "Stats" on the top menu, have been updated to include data for June 2008. Or you can simply click here. Note that only partial data is available for Janurary and Feburary 2008 (the button background color is changed as a visual indication) - due to the fact that some logging data was lost when the access logfile exceeded 2G bytes in size. Whoops! :)

Tue June 10 2008 Milax developer, Alexander Eremin, has released updated versions of MilaX - now at revision 0.3.1. In addition to the usual desktop editions, todays releases include the Server Edition of Milax; no desktop GUI - but server packages like Apache, PHP, Samba etc. See the Announcement here. Checkout the Milax download area.

Mon May 5 2008 Today is a huge milestone in the ongoing progress of the OpenSolaris project. Today we have a distribution, formerly known as Project Indiana, being released as the first distribution called OpenSolaris. I know you just want the download links - you can read all the details elsewhere.... There are 2 versions of the OpenSolaris ISOs: os200805.iso is a bit larger, uses gzip for compression, has fewer supported languages, and installs reasonably quickly. os200805g.iso (g for global) is a bit smaller, uses lzma for compression, has 11 supported languages, and takes twice as long to install. Recommendation: If you want to download only one image, use os200805.iso. Remember to verify your md5 checksums as follows:
1ef56fc1d43c630c50e4636de14963eb os200805.iso
94aa8b6ab6f56b3924e623b4afdc31d0 os200805g.iso

Fri Feb 15 2008 The Documentation Team never sleeps.... Or at least that is how it appears from the outside! :) Without a doubt they produce some of the best docs in the industry. Checkout their February release: Tue Feb 12 2008 Here it is, the latest/greatest Project Indiana Preview 2

Fri Feb 1 2008 The folks at Nexenta.Org continue to demonstrate ingenuity and innovation with their latest OpenSolaris based distribution called NexentaCP (Core Platform). NexentaCP combines the power of OpenSolaris with the usability of Linux! The install image is compact (around 320Mb) and quickly downloaded from here. The clever part of this work is the associated APT package repository (updated automagically every hour) - from which the Core Platform can be configured for the task at hand. Many congrats to Team Nexenta!

Fri Jan 25 2008 One of the best known FOSS contributors and longtime friend to Solaris/OpenSolaris is up to his old tricks again! :) When I say old tricks - I'm referring to the fact that he published the very first OpenSolaris based distribution - at a time when many of the required tools and libraries were simply not available. In case you still have not figured it out, I'm referring to Joerg Schilling, famous for his cdrecord and related contributions. His latest surprise, is a new release of SchilliX version 0.6. Naturally Genunix has a copy of his latest SchilliX distribution ready for downloading. Check it out now! Congrats Joerg and many, many thanks for your numereous, high quality and highly valued, FOSS contributions!

Thu Nov 1st 2007 Today marks an exciting day in the milestones of OpenSolaris with the preview release of Project Indiana. Download the Indiana preview release. Read the Project Indiana release notes. Now join OpenSolaris and help shape the future!

Fri July 13th 2007 Take a quick look at the Genunix site statistics through June 2007. We are proud of these numbers and happy to provide this service to the OpenSolaris community. We'd also like to thank ISC (again) for their ongoing support - they provide the "fat" pipe that makes Genunix such a powerful and useful community resource.

Talking about Genunix stats... Since it was announced on Wed the 28th of May 2007, BeleniX 0.6 has proven to be a very popular Genunix download. Take a look at the site statistics through May 2007 and notice the "Average data transferred per day" for the last 7 days of May (the numbers shown in parentheses in the General Summary section). Yes - 140.81 gigabytes per day in the last 7 days of May! Probably 98% of that traffic was generated by BeleniX 0.6 downloads! Many congratulations to Moinak Ghosh and his team. Well done indeed!

As of 02:00PM, Saturday, July 28th, 2007, over 6,165 copies of BeleniX 0.6 and 2,335 copies of BeleniX 0.7.0 have been downloaded from Genunix. People are discovering just how useful and well engineered this, OpenSolaris based, distribution really is.
